FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What certifications should I look for in a boiler installer?

Gas Boilers – Gas Safe Register (UK):

Installers working on gas boilers must be Gas Safe registered. This is a legal requirement in the UK.

Check their Gas Safe ID card, which should display their unique license number and the types of appliances they’re qualified to work on (e.g., boilers, cookers).

Verify their registration on the official Gas Safe Register website.

A boiler should typically be serviced yearly to ensure it operates safely, efficiently, and reliably. Regular servicing is essential for maintaining your boiler’s performance and prolonging its lifespan.

Gas boilers are one of the most common types, and with regular maintenance, they can last up to 15 years or more. Efficiency tends to decrease over time, especially in older models.

Immediate Steps to Take

  • Turn Off the Gas Supply – Locate your gas meter and turn the gas supply off at the mains. Typically, the valve is near the gas meter and can be turned 90 degrees to shut off the gas.
  • Open Windows and Doors – Ventilate the area by opening windows and doors. This allows the gas to disperse and reduces the risk of a buildup that could ignite.
  • Do Not Ignite Anything – Avoid using anything that could cause a spark, such as matches, lighters, electrical switches, or mobile phones.
  • Do not smoke or use open flames near the suspected leak.
  • Evacuate the Premises – Leave the property immediately if the smell of gas is strong or if you suspect a significant leak. Ensure everyone in the household leaves as well.
  • Call for Emergency Help – Contact the appropriate emergency service: Call the National Gas Emergency Service on 0800 111 999.
  • Turn Off Appliances – If safe to do so, turn off any gas appliances in the area, such as the boiler, cooker, or fireplace.
